Enrique Santos Discepolo(1901-1951): tango poetry. The times of Cambalache.

Discepolo is still one of the most significant tango poets of the century.
I built his story round 3 themes which seemed to me as the most interesting in the poet's life and tangos:

(1) the love story

(2) history of tango "Cambalache" (junk-shop)

(3) involvement with peronism.

Sources

ToDoTango - a comprehensive source of Argentine tango music, poetry and history. The site has a lengthy interview with Tania, Discepolo's wife (translated) and other articles about the poet.

Marta Savigliano, "Tango and the political economy of passion" (the translations of some lyrics)

The translation of "Cambalache" is from The Argentina Reader: History, Culture, Politics (The Latin America Readers), Duke University Press, 2002.

Special Thanx

Rob Connaire for loaning me a recording of "Cambalache" which I liked the most.
