12 Tangos: Adios Buenos Aires, documentary.
Interview with Arne Birkenstock, director

"Tango is a child of crisis", - wrote Sonia Abadi, an astute observer of the Buenos Aires tango scene.
12 Tangos: Adios Buenos Aires is a documentary about the economic crisis, Argentine emigration, despair and rebirth of the tango told with the twelve modern and classic tangos. The wonderful music is arranged and recorded exclusively for 12 Tangos.

The director Arne Birkenstock (Cologne, Germany) has a long-running "love affair" with the Argentine tango and the deep interest in its country of origin. He talks about the events which inspired his documentary and the people who appeared in it.

In my humble opinion, 12 Tangos is the best professionally made documentary on the subject of modern Argentina and the renaissance of its tango.

Music Director: Luis Borda. Choreographer: the one and the only Gillermina Quiroga.

The Tango "Los 4 vampiros banqueros" deals with corralito and crisis in Argentina. The film sequence shows archives from the protests in 2001/2002 and the impressions of young elementary school students about their experiences during that crisis. The music was exclusively recorded by "las muñecas" for the documentary "12 Tangos". Performed in "La Catedral" in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The wonderful Tango "La Cachila" performed in "La Catedral" (Buenos Aires) by five of the best argentinian musicians: José Libertella, Luis Borda, Mauricio Marcelli, Diego Schissi and Oscar Giunta. The tango was exlusively performed and recorded for the movie "12 Tangos".

Snippets from the soundtrack CD 12 Tangos: Adios Buenos Aires.

The first time I heard the soundtrack of 12 tangos: Adios Buenos Aires  I started pining to have it for my collection. The tracks are super-cool - the tango of the 21st century at its best. Just listen to Milonga de mis amores with a horn section and percussion, Sur sung by Lidia Borda or the theme piece Ironia de Salon.

The composer and guitarist Luis Borda brought together several generations of the tango masters into the great ensemble: Maria de la Fuente is 92, Lidia Borda (THE tango diva of the present), Gabriel Menendez, Jorge Sobral and Eduardo Borda. The legendary bandoneonist José Libertella (of Sexteto Mayor and original Tango Argentino fame) plays together with Julio Pane and the young Pablo Mainetti (nominated for a Grammy Award). The solo-violin is played by Mauricio Marcelli, the Teatro Colón's concert master. He is supported by Humberto Ridolfi (violin) and Elisabet Ridolfi (viola). With the pianist Diego Schissi and the Salgán-bassist Oscar Giunta, the rhythm group also brings together different generations.

In sum, 12 Tangos is cross-generational, cross-cultural experience. A must-have for those who love the new tango.
